I did an art review of this Sea Dragon - you can read it at: Fantasy Art Gift / Sea Dragon … but with it being a dragon and a very unique and gorgeous one at that, I just had to include it here too. This painting appears as an abstract at first glance because the first thing I saw were the three body cells in an undulating motion … I didn’t notice the dragon’s head and face until I went looking for it - I love contrasts and unexpected surprises in paintings - this is quite magical in the fact that the head of the dragon is not the focal point of the painting and until I found it, I wondered why on earth the artist had named it Sea Dragon.

Today’s featured art is Behind the Smiles by William Burns
This monochromatic scene with the gorgeous smiling scantily clad girl in front of the quite obviously rock size bulging scales dragon evilly grinning is very striking and the artist has chosen absolutely the perfect mat and frame to surround it.
Normally, I am all for lots of color - the more the better … but this is perfect in the blacks, whites, silver grays and contrasts all over in between those two extremes. The balance, shapes and contrasts move me in circles.
The artist has put the semi-nude woman in basically the center of the picture but surrounded her into a circle with the dragon behind her with it’s tail curling around her in front so it works well to create the focal point and not to cut the landscape into halves.
I think this is a brilliant handling of the subject, the color harmony and the presentation.
